High-profile leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are currently spearheading a massive “Save Nigeria Democracy” protest across the streets of Abuja.
The demonstration features a rare gathering of political heavyweights, including Peter Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and ex-Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Also in attendance are former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
The march commenced at the Maitama Roundabout and is progressing toward the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Atiku and the ADC leadership have leveled serious allegations against the commission, accusing the electoral body of functioning as an arm of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to subvert democratic processes.
Protesters were seen waving placards with various messages, including “Hands off our courts,” while Rotimi Amaechi addressed the crowd from a moving van.
Documenting the event on his X handle, Atiku Abubakar shared footage of himself on the front lines, stating: “Myself and other leaders of the ADC are peacefully protesting against the partisanship of the electoral umpire.”
He further emphasized that “Our patriotic stance is aimed at safeguarding our democracy and preventing the enthronement of a dictatorship.”
Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and now a leading figure in the ADC, had earlier rallied citizens to the cause. “We say NO to a one-party system and for that today we’re calling out Nigerians who believe in unity, peace, and security of our country to join us as we defend democracy in our land,”
Obi posted on X. Visuals from the scene, shared by his photographer Esther Umoh, showed Obi and Kwankwaso holding a prominent banner that read: “Tinubu, let our democracy breathe.”
This unified front by the opposition marks a significant escalation in the political climate as they march to demand total neutrality from the nation’s electoral umpire.
