Ex-Kano Governor Kabiru Gaya Dumps APC, Joins ADC

Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, the former Governor of Kano State and representative of the Kano South Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly, has officially defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

This development marks a significant realignment in Kano’s political landscape.

In a formal resignation letter dated April 5, 2026, and addressed to the Gaya Arewa Ward Chairman, Adam A. Adam, Gaya declared: “I hereby formally tender my resignation from the All Progressive Congress (APC) effective today, 5th April 2026.”

Reflecting on his time with the party, the veteran politician noted, “It has been an honour to serve under the platform of the party, particularly during my tenure as a Senator (2015–2023). I remain grateful for the support, trust, and opportunities given to me during this period.”

Gaya explained that his decision was not made in isolation, stating: “However, after careful reflection and wide consultation, I have come to the considered conclusion that it is in the best interest of my constituents and my personal convictions to step aside from the party at this time. I extend my sincere gratitude to the party for the platform it provided me and for the cooperation and camaraderie extended over the years.”

Shortly after the letter was acknowledged and surfaced online, Senator Gaya confirmed his transition to the ADC during a media briefing.

He revealed that he maintains a cordial relationship with political heavyweights Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna.

He emphasized that they are “working together to strengthen the ADC and enhance its prospects in Kano State.”

This move comes closely after a similar defection by Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate, suggesting a major shift in the state’s power dynamics ahead of the next electoral cycle.
