The Delta State Police Command has taken decisive action following the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi.
The officer involved, ASP Nuhu Usman, has been detained and moved to the Force Headquarters in Abuja to face a disciplinary panel.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, the event took place on Sunday, April 26, 2026.
The police had acted on information suggesting the deceased was caught trying to transport a firearm.
The statement explained:“The unfortunate incident occurred when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun received credible intelligence from members of the public regarding the deceased, who was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition”

While the team was sent to take the suspect into custody, the lead officer reportedly bypassed official rules regarding the use of force.
Edafe noted that the officer, “in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect”.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, strongly denounced the act, labeling it an “extrajudicial killing”. He immediately ordered that the officer be apprehended and sent to Asaba before his subsequent transfer to the national capital.
The command confirmed:“The officer has since been queried and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, currently in session, for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution.”
The Delta Command stressed its dedication to “respect for the rule of law, human rights, professionalism, accountability and public trust” and maintained its “zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extra-judicial conduct”.
CP Oyeniyi offered his “sincere condolences to the family of the deceased” and promised that the police are “fully committed to ensuring that justice is served”.
Residents have been encouraged to stay peaceful while the legal and disciplinary processes move forward.
