2027: Why Kwankwaso Can’t Be Obi’s Running Mate – Datti Baba-Ahmed

Datti Baba-Ahmed, the former vice presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has expressed skepticism regarding the potential for Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to serve as Peter Obi’s running mate in the 2027 presidential race.

During an interview on Channels Television, Baba-Ahmed reflected on Kwankwaso’s extensive political tenure and questioned if a figure with such a deep background would be willing to accept a deputy role.

He noted that Kwankwaso’s career in public service spans decades, beginning as Deputy Speaker in 1990, followed by two terms as the Governor of Kano State starting in 1999.

His resume also includes serving as the Minister of Defence and as a Senator, alongside holding academic credentials such as a PhD.

Baba-Ahmed further explained that Kwankwaso’s formidable political foundation, particularly in the highly populated Kano State where he remains a dominant figure, adds a layer of complexity to the situation.

He suggested that because of this influence, it might be challenging for him to take a secondary position.

According to Baba-Ahmed, Kwankwaso’s standing and political strength might not align with a deputy slot, as such a move may not match his expectations or established status in Nigerian politics.

He said: “You have ex-Governor Kwankwaso about 70. In 1990 he was a deputy speaker, in 1999 he was a governor. He was a two-term governor, minister of defence, senator, PhD. His local government is nearly the state of Obi, the Kano State is almost the population of that region. His governor has been taken away by clever APC. He is an armored tank without a firing pin, he can only roll over any object but he cannot fire. And that he is going to deputize Peter Obi, how is that possible? But I want it to work if it will work.”
