The British government has officially declared its neutrality ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, stating clearly that it has no favorite candidate or political party.
The British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Gill Lever, made this disclosure during a courtesy visit to the Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria’s Governors’ Forum (NGF), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, in Ilorin.
Lever emphasized that the United Kingdom remains committed only to the integrity of the electoral process rather than the outcome.

“The British Government would support a free, peaceful, and credible election in Nigeria next year,” she said.
“Downing Street has no favourite political party and will not be seen interfering in local political matters.”

The envoy further explained that the British government is focused on ensuring an environment where all Nigerians can exercise their rights without interference.
“We all want to see elections that are peaceful, that are inclusive, and that are credible, with space for participation and with respect for institutions,” Lever stated.
“The British government, as you’ll understand, Excellency, is entirely neutral. We do not favour one party or another, and we would never be in the business of telling Nigerian people how to vote.”
She added that while credible elections are a democratic objective, they are also an “economic objective or imperative as well.”
