The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays across the country to mark the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the announcement on Monday through an official statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
According to the release, the mid-week holiday honors the religious devotion and cultural heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims joining the global Islamic community for the sacred festival.
Tunji-Ojo extended his warm congratulations to Islamic faithful both within Nigeria and in the diaspora, describing Eid-ul-Adha as a major spiritual milestone anchored on deep sacrifice, piety, and kindness toward fellow human beings.
The minister encouraged citizens to utilize the two-day break to pray for national stability, protection, and economic growth.
“The Federal Government urges all Nigerians to use this period for prayer and sober reflection, asking for divine guidance upon the country as it continues its pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity for every citizen,”
He further emphasized the need for Nigerians to cultivate the values of unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence throughout the festive period, while the government wished the entire Muslim Ummah a happy and peaceful celebration.
