The former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu Abubakar, has officially resigned his membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He stated that the execution of the Nasarawa State governorship primary election completely undermined the core principles of fairness and internal democracy.
In an official statement, Isa Nathaniel, the Director of the Contact and Mobilization Committee for Adamu’s campaign organization, announced that the former police boss has formally pitched his tent with the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
“After wide-ranging consultations with stakeholders, delegates, supporters, and committed party members across Nasarawa State, Adamu Mohamed and his political movement have officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and formally joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).” part of the statement read.
“This decision follows the disgraceful charade that masqueraded as the APC Governorship Primary Election held on May 21, 2026. Authentic results independently collated from wards and local government areas across the state clearly confirmed that Rtd. IGP Adamu Mohamed secured a decisive victory before desperate political merchants hijacked the process, mutilated the mandate of delegates, and forcefully announced a prearranged outcome. What happened was not a primary election; it was a coordinated assault on democracy. The APC leadership abandoned every principle of fairness and openly supervised the rape of internal democracy in pursuit of selfish political interests. The voices of thousands of party members were brutally silenced so that a tiny cabal could satisfy its greed and maintain control over the state’s political structure.” Nathaniel said.
Adamu, who participated in the APC governorship primary and was declared to have lost to Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, personally submitted his resignation letter on Monday to the party officials of Makama Ward in Lafia Local Government Area.
The letter was formally received by the ward’s Deputy Chairman, Ahmed Awwal, and the Secretary, Usman Abdullahi.
“In your presence, Deputy Chairman Ahmed Awwal and Secretary Usman Abdullahi, I am addressing a letter to you to resign from the APC party,” he said before formally presenting the document.
In the written resignation, Adamu explained that the decision was not a light one but was heavily informed by “recent developments within the party, especially the conduct of the Governorship primary election in Nasarawa State,” which he pointed out made it practically impossible to carry on with his political goals under the APC umbrella.
“I strongly believe that internal democracy, fairness, transparency and equal opportunity for all aspirants and members are essential principles that must guide the affairs of any democratic political party,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, the events surrounding the primary election did not reflect these principles and have led to a loss of confidence in the party’s leadership and processes in the state.”

The retired police chief made it clear that he arrived at this crossroad after extensive deliberations with his core supporters, political associates, and family members, maintaining that he would now actively pursue his governorship ambition on his new alternative platform.
According to the disputed official results, Adamu polled 39,675 votes in the governorship primary against Wadada’s 195,285 votes. Notably, the incumbent Governor, Abdullahi Sule, had publicly endorsed and backed Wadada as his preferred successor ahead of the primary contest.
