Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has strongly dismissed media reports claiming he plans to run as the vice-presidential candidate alongside former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 general elections.
Speculations had surfaced that Mohammed, who recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), was being lined up for the running mate slot under a faction of the PDP led by Kabiru Turaki.
This comes on the heels of the Turaki-led faction recently naming Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 polls.
Jonathan was ratified as the group’s flagbearer during a special national convention at their factional office in Area 10, Garki District, Abuja.
Although the former president did not attend the gathering in person, his Certificate of Return was picked up on his behalf by Fred Agbedi, a member of the House of Representatives representing Bayelsa State.
The rumors picked up momentum after Nuhu Sada, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), claimed on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that reports pointed to Governor Mohammed being positioned as Jonathan’s number two.
Reacting swiftly to the claims, the Bauchi State Governor completely shut down the reports, making it clear that his immediate political focus is to represent the Bauchi South Senatorial District under the banner of the APM.
Addressing the public on his official X account, Governor Mohammed stated:“Thank you for your interest in my political aspirations. However, for the sake of clarity, my focus remains firmly on contesting for the Bauchi South Senatorial District seat under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
“Any reports suggesting a different political course should be disregarded as speculative and inaccurate.”
Governor Mohammed recently exited the PDP to join the APM following the deep, unresolved leadership crisis tearing the main opposition party apart.
