FG Declares June 12 Public Holiday To Mark Democracy Day

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially designated Friday, June 12, as a public holiday to celebrate Democracy Day.

Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the observance, noting that the date is observed to honor the “courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts made democratic governance possible in this country.”

In a statement released by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the government emphasized that the impact of those honored on this day remains vital, stating, “Their legacy continues to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state.”

Reaffirming the government’s dedication to democratic principles, Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted a commitment to transparency, accountability, the rule of law, and inclusive governance.

He added, “The administration has pledged to uphold these principles without compromise.”

The Minister also assured citizens that the Ministry of Interior is working closely with security agencies to enhance safety, noting that “a secure and stable environment” is foundational to national development and a healthy democracy.

On this occasion, the Minister encouraged the public to engage in civic reflection and to foster national unity.

Addressing the nation, he said, “As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens.”
