The Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has hit back after renowned musician David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, publicly insulted him on social media by calling him a “local dog.”
The public dispute stemmed from rumors regarding Omokri’s diplomatic posting. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Omokri addressed claims that the Mexican government had rejected him.
He clarified that his delayed resumption was simply due to “Mexico City being heavily occupied with administrative and logistical preparations” for co-hosting the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States.
Following these comments, Davido mocked the ambassador-designate on social media, writing, “Umu Bingo @renoomokri fowl.”
On Tuesday, Omokri took to his Instagram page to share screenshots of the disparaging remark.
He expressed his disappointment, noting that he was “rather surprised” by the singer’s use of “vulgar language.”
Omokri suggested the hostility arose from his previous critique of the musician regarding a jacket Davido wore during a World Cup performance, which featured the names of abducted Oyo schoolchildren.
While acknowledging the singer’s potential good intentions, Omokri argued that the move was misguided.
“Dear Mr. David Adeleke AKA Davido, thank you for your feedback. I was rather surprised by your response to my post. Most shocking is your insult. You are an international celebrity whom Nigeria is proud of. Coming to insult me on my Instagram profile with such vulgar words should be beneath you,” Omokri wrote.
He added, “Yes, I’m aware that you were upset at my appeal to you not to use an international platform, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to give publicity to bandits and terrorists. I am also aware that Peter Obi praised you for doing that, which may have made you feel compelled to defend him. I did that because while your intention may be good and you think you are pressuring the government, the actual effect of what you did is to give publicity to the terrorists and help them spread fear, recruit new members, and raise funds.”
Omokri contrasted the incident with other celebrity appearances, noting, “Meanwhile, IShowSpeed, an American, at that same event used the global stage of the World Cup to market Nigeria by wearing the jersey and speak well about Nigeria.”
