President Bola Tinubu has greenlit a federal government team headed by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, to serve as Nigeria’s representatives at the inaugural Nigeria Diaspora Investment Economic Conference situated in Toronto, Canada.
The team comprises Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang alongside Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal.
Carrying the theme “Invest Nigeria, Thrive Abroad,” the summit is slated to run from August 12 through August 15 within Toronto.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission made the disclosure public via an official statement posted on X on Friday.
The announcement noted that the roster of delegation members similarly features the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, alongside the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, and the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Delegates representing the Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Revenue Service, Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission, Nigeria Export Promotion Council as well as the National Information Technology Development Agency are likewise slated to take part.
Canadian dignitaries slated for the summit comprise President of the Treasury Board of Canada, Shafqat Ali, Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism, Graham McGregor, Ontario lawmaker Deepak Anand, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, Councillor Rod Power, alongside Ontario Minister of Women and Economic Opportunities, Charmaine Williams.
Quoting the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the statement said, “The calibre of officials attending the conference demonstrates President Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening economic cooperation between Nigeria and Canada through trade, investment and diaspora engagement.”
It further quoted Dabiri-Erewa as saying the event “is more than a conference” and is designed as “an outcome-driven investment platform” that will connect international investors with “investment-ready” opportunities across key sectors of Nigeria’s economy while strengthening bilateral economic relations between the two countries.
The release detailed that NiDCOM is staging the event jointly with the Nigerian High Commission located in Ottawa, the Canadian High Commission based in Abuja as well as additional stakeholders.
Conversations are set to center around agriculture, technology, manufacturing, infrastructure, energy, healthcare together with the digital economy.
The Nigeria Diaspora Investment Economic Conference stands as the initial investment-centric gathering put together by the federal administration via NiDCOM to foster economic alliances linking Nigeria with its global diaspora population.
Data from the World Bank indicates that Nigeria ranks among the top African destinations for diaspora remittances, pulling in billions of dollars in yearly capital inflows.
