Former Lagos State Attorney-General and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Professor Alfred Kasunmu, has passed away.
According to a statement issued by his family, he died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, August 9.
Remembering his remarkable life and career, the family paid tribute to his enduring impact: “Professor Kasunmu was not only a cherished patriarch of our family but also a distinguished scholar, mentor, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria whose legacy of wisdom, integrity, and service will continue to inspire generations.
The family noted that Kasunmu touched countless lives through his dedication to law, education, and humanity.
While final funeral arrangements will be communicated later, family members will receive visitors on Saturday, August 15, and Sunday, August 16, between 1pm and 7pm, asking for prayers during their period of mourning”.
Kasunmu was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1964, starting his academic career the same year as a pioneer lecturer in the Faculty of Law at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University).
He moved to the University of Lagos in 1971 as a senior lecturer, attained professorship in 1973, and led the faculty as dean from 1973 to 1975.
He subsequently served as Lagos State Attorney-General from 1975 to 1978 before entering private legal practice and founding Prof. A.B. Kasunmu Chambers.
Beyond public service, he was a prolific legal writer, co-authoring Nigerian Family Law with Jeswald W. Salacuse in 1966 and editing The Supreme Court of Nigeria, 1956–1970, published by Heinemann Educational Books.
