Former President Olusegun Obasanjo made a surprise congratulatory visit to Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, in the wake of his triumph in Saturday’s fiercely contested governorship election.

Adeleke was officially proclaimed the winner of the poll on Sunday after garnering a total of 511,067 votes throughout the state.

Running on the platform of the Accord Party, the incumbent governor triumphed over his main opponent, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who accumulated 444,815 votes.

Adeleke clinched victories across 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, whereas Oyebamiji secured wins in 11.

The governor’s sweeping victories included Ede North, Ede South, Ejigbo, Iwo, Egbedore, Ife North, Ife East, Ife Central, Oriade, Ifelodun, Orolu, Ayedaade, Ayedire, Odo Otin, Boluwaduro, Ilesa West, Ifedayo, and Osogbo, amongst others.

Obasanjo’s unexpected visit occurred just hours after Adeleke was formally announced as the winner of the tense election, securing a renewed four-year mandate to govern the state.
