Last Saturday, infuriated students at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) in Awka assaulted and stripped an unnamed lecturer from the Department of Chinese Studies following accusations of an attempted sexual assault on a female student.

NAU, a federal educational institution located in Anambra State, is widely referred to as UNIZIK.

Reports indicate the drama unfolded after the female student emerged from the lecturer’s office carrying his clothing, alleging that the academic had tried to sexually assault her inside.

A widely circulated video clip shows at least six individuals, presumed to be male students, repeatedly striking and stomping on the completely naked lecturer on the university grounds.

The female student, observed weeping as she supposedly fled the office, reportedly feigned consent to the sexual advances until the lecturer had taken off most of his garments.

In response, the UNIZIK administration strongly condemned the physical attack and public humiliation of the lecturer.

Through a press release issued on Saturday night, UNIZIK spokesperson Aloysius Attah announced that the institution has launched a probe into the event that took place on campus.

“Management is deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident and strongly condemns the resort to violence, self-help, or any form of jungle justice under any circumstance.”

“Given the seriousness of the matter, the university management has directed that an immediate, comprehensive and impartial investigation be conducted to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said.

Attah noted that UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ugochukwu Anyaehie, maintains the institution’s strict stance against sexual misconduct, harassment, and any inappropriate actions.

“At the same time, management emphasises that allegations of misconduct must be handled through established institutional procedures and due process.”

“No individual or group is permitted to take the law into their own hands within the university environment,” he said.

The university spokesperson stressed that “appropriate administrative processes” have been put in motion to guarantee that “justice is served fairly and objectively to all parties involved.”

He maintained that the school is dedicated to defending the dignity, well-being, and safety of both students and staff, promising strict penalties for any behavior violating these core values.

“Further pronouncements and developments on the matter shall be communicated in due course,” he assured.
