The Kano State Government has officially declared Tuesday, September 1, 2026, a work-free day to enable residents across the state to observe and celebrate the annual traditional and religious Takutaha procession.
According to Circular No. 7/2026—signed by Abba A. Danguguwa, Permanent Secretary of the Establishment Directorate in the Office of the Head of Civil Service, on behalf of the Head of Service—this holiday aligns with the 19th of Rabi’ul Awwal, 1448AH.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf sanctioned the directive, which was formally transmitted to key government functionaries, encompassing commissioners, permanent secretaries, and chief executives of government agencies.
In its announcement, the administration emphasized that Takutaha holds profound spiritual and cultural significance, encouraging civil servants to dedicate the day to prayers and reflection aimed at securing divine peace and prosperity for Kano and the nation at large, while noting that essential services will remain fully functional.
Observing a centuries-old tradition every 19th of Rabi’ul Awwal, Takutaha marks the seventh-day naming milestone following the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
This historic procession traditionally attracts massive crowds from near and far, featuring participants adorned in vibrant traditional attire who move through the ancient city in groups while chanting praises to the Prophet.
A central highlight of the celebration involves participants marching toward the Twin Dala and Goron Dutse hills, where they ascend the elevations to share meals, feast, and take in religious performances while enjoying panoramic views of Kano.
