The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, has disclosed that he generated a monthly income of N10 million from selling bean cake, locally called akara, alongside bread during his career as a private businessman.
The state leader shared this experience while addressing participants at the state’s monthly summit on Tuesday. A trending video capturing a snippet of the governor’s speech at the gathering has since gained widespread traction across various social media platforms.
Speaking on his humble beginnings in commercial enterprise, Eno explained how his innovative food preparation model grew to attract workers across the state. “
We still have that shop there. I started selling akara and bread. We’re doing akara burger. We’d open the bread and put akara for you,” he remarked while detailing the operation.
He noted that the routine quickly gained popularity among corporate employees during early morning hours, saying, “People going to work in ExxonMobil would buy it in the morning, take coffee. we started coffee shop…”
The governor emphasized the high profitability of the venture, highlighting how consistent demand translated into significant monthly revenue for his enterprise.
Reflecting on the financial returns of the business model, he stated, “Every month, that akara and bread business used to give me nothing less than N10 million.”
His comments underline his position that micro-enterprises and food service operations hold substantial earning potential when managed effectively.
The governor’s public statement arrives approximately three months after Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, advised struggling citizens and young people to engage in low-capital ventures like selling akara using government grants instead of taking loans.
Eno’s personal account serves as a practical illustration of how small-scale food initiatives can scale into lucrative commercial ventures.
