Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has publicly explained his decision to part ways with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming that Obi lacks a clear strategic vision for Nigeria.
Baba-Ahmed ran alongside Obi on the Labour Party joint ticket during the 2023 presidential election. Following that election cycle, Obi briefly aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) before formally moving to the NDC as its presidential flagbearer for the upcoming 2027 election.
Speaking during an exclusive interview on Symfoni TV, Baba-Ahmed clarified that he felt compelled to step back rather than offer blanket political backing to opposition candidates without a solid blueprint.
He emphasized that he would not place President Bola Tinubu at a political disadvantage by backing opposition figures like ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar or Obi without objective justification.
“I won’t unfairly help promote Baba Atiku and Peter Obi and others just for no good reason because we need to be fair in life, and that’s what I stand for,” Baba-Ahmed stated.
Reflecting on their past political partnership, the former lawmaker noted that despite his significant contributions to Obi’s 2023 campaign, key political differences ultimately forced a rift.
“I worked really hard for Peter Obi, but his team doesn’t remember things very well. I let Peter Obi know that he needs to come up with a plan since he doesn’t have one yet,” he revealed.
Baba-Ahmed further clarified that his departure was a personal political choice rather than a dismissal by the former Anambra State governor.
“Peter Obi didn’t abandon me; I left because he doesn’t have a plan for Nigeria. Peter Obi knows I stood for him. I still stand by him. It’s sad to see the moves he made. But it is his choice,” he added.
