Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced a ₦50,000 wardrobe allowance for each of the 20,000 public school teachers under the state government’s employ.
Speaking on Monday at the Uyo Township Stadium during the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration, Governor Eno declared a total state of emergency in the education sector while outlining new welfare packages and structural interventions.
As part of the package, the governor announced that 1,776 registered private schools across the state will each receive ₦500,000 to extend support to their teaching staff. He also authorized the recruitment of an additional 2,000 public school teachers following the recent employment of 1,000 educators.
Highlighting his administration’s milestones, Governor Eno noted that ₦15 billion has been released as a matching grant for the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), alongside ongoing payments of gratuities and intervention projects across more than 100 schools.
“Every year we have met the matching grant of SUBEB, and today we have released the sum of N15 billion as matching grant of SUBEB and have intervened in over 100 schools. We have continued to pay gratuity to our teachers,” he stated.
“We have upheld a free and compulsory education and we have consistently paid our WASSCE and NECO fees for all Akwa Ibom sons, and daughters. Till date, we have registered 172,000 students for these examinations.”
Outlining the expansion of the state teaching workforce, the governor disclosed details regarding the upcoming recruitment process.
“I have granted approval for another 2,000 teachers, the portals will soon be open and you can apply, then you take the computer-based test. That you scored 100% in computer-based tests does not automatically convert to automatic employment,” Governor Eno noted.
“I have approved another N50,000 per teacher as a wardrobe allowance for all the 20,000 teachers that are employed. I have been briefed that there are 1,776 registered private schools in Akwa Ibom. For each of those schools registered, they will receive the sum of N500,000 so that they can also spread love to their teachers.”
He officially proclaimed a systemic intervention in the state’s schools, tasking key officials with leading the reform agenda.
“I hereby declare a total state of emergency in the Akwa Ibom State’s educational system, and the Deputy Governor who herself is a teacher will work with the Commissioner for Education, will set up a team and will look at the educational sector holistically,” he said.
Governor Eno also announced Professor Philip Afaha as the Vice Chancellor of the Akwa Ibom State University of Education, directing him to immediately pursue institutional accreditation. Additionally, he ordered the Interministerial Direct Labour Committee to assume control of the uncompleted Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) secretariat building and ensure its completion within six months.
