Tensions flared in Sokoto State on Wednesday as energetic supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) broke into chants of “Tinubu Must Go” immediately after the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, arrived in the state capital.

Atiku touched down in Sokoto to lead the official flag-off of the ADC presidential campaign scheduled for Wednesday.

In a video currently trending across social media platforms, a massive crowd lined the main roads as Atiku’s motorcade entered Sokoto, waving ADC flags and campaign posters while shouting “Tinubu Must Go, Atiku is Coming.”

The campaign event, dubbed the “Northern Hurricane,” had been shrouded in political friction following serious allegations raised by Atiku on Tuesday, where he accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of attempting to sponsor protests to disrupt the rally and provide grounds for the APC-led Sokoto State Government to declare a curfew.

Speaking during an emergency press conference in Abuja on Tuesday evening, the former Vice President maintained that no administrative or security intimidation would prevent the rally from taking place.

“I will be in Sokoto tomorrow, God willing, to address the good people of the state,” Atiku affirmed.

He further alleged that key public access points were intentionally barricaded and heavy-duty vehicles were parked behind Zenith Bank along Koko Road in Sokoto to deploy mobilized groups and stall traffic flow ahead of his arrival.

Responding to the statements, the DSS denied any involvement in plots to disrupt the political gathering, though the agency confirmed that its Director General had initiated an internal inquiry into the matter.

The secret police pointed out that its personnel had previously stepped in to rescue the ADC governorship candidate in Sokoto, Mannir Daniya, following a violent assault on October 31, during which two security officers sustained injuries.

Undeterred by the heightened security presence and prior controversies, thousands of party faithful turned out in high numbers to welcome Atiku, singing political solidarity anthems and calling for executive power transition in the 2027 general elections.
