Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has proposed a six-year single-term rotational presidency between Nigeria’s northern and southern regions.
In a letter addressed to Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who chairs the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, Atiku requested that his proposal be included in the ongoing constitutional amendment process.
The letter, dated August 29, 2024, but made public this week, was signed by Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election.

He suggested that a new paragraph ‘a’ be added to Section 130 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, stating: “The office of the President shall rotate among the six geopolitical zones of the Federation on a single term of six years, alternating between the North and South.”
Atiku also proposed amending Section 135 (2) to say: “Subject to subsection 1, the President shall vacate office at the expiration of a six-year term commencing from the date of their election.”
Having run for president six times over the past 30 years, Atiku finished the 2023 election with 6,984,520 votes, trailing Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 8,794,726 votes. Tinubu was declared the winner and inaugurated as President on May 29, 2023.
