Ruben Amorim Named As New Manchester United Manager

The 39-year-old Portuguese coach, a two-time Primeira Liga champion with Sporting Lisbon, has agreed to a contract until 2027 and is set to take charge on November 11.

“Manchester United is pleased to announce Ruben Amorim as head coach of the men’s first team, pending work visa approval,” the club announced on its website. “He will serve as manager through June 2027, with an optional additional year, once he concludes his commitments with his current club.”

United praised Amorim as “one of Europe’s most promising and highly regarded young coaches,” noting his successful track record. “Highly decorated as both a player and coach, he won the Primeira Liga twice with Sporting CP, including their first title in 19 years,” the statement added.

Until Amorim’s arrival, Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue as interim manager at Old Trafford.

Amorim will lead Sporting Lisbon through their next three games before the international break, beginning with Friday’s match against Estrela. Sporting is set to face Manchester City in the Champions League next Tuesday, with Amorim’s final game scheduled against Braga on November 10.

Amorim’s debut for United will be on November 24, in an away game against Ipswich. Sporting confirmed they have reached an agreement with Manchester United, which includes a compensation fee of €11 million ($12 million).

Ten Hag was dismissed on Monday following United’s 2-1 loss to West Ham, which left the team 14th in the Premier League, with only three wins in nine matches. Amorim quickly emerged as United’s preferred candidate, with Sporting confirming United’s willingness to meet his release clause earlier this week.

Asked about the move in a press conference before Sporting’s game against Estrela, Amorim kept details to a minimum. “It’s a negotiation between two clubs,” he stated on Thursday. “Even with clauses, it’s never simple – there are always discussions.”

United’s recent League Cup win over Leicester (5-2) offered a reprieve, yet the club’s form in recent weeks has been underwhelming, with just one victory in the previous eight matches across competitions.

Ten Hag had won the League Cup and FA Cup during his tenure, but the club remains without a Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013.

Van Nistelrooy expressed determination to help improve United’s season, saying Thursday he was “motivated” to guide the squad as they prepare for Sunday’s showdown with Chelsea.

Amorim, a former Portugal international, began his coaching career in 2018 with Casa Pia in Portugal’s third tier before moving to Braga.

He joined Sporting in 2020, clinching their first league title in nearly two decades in his first full season, and repeating the success last season.

Recognized as one of Europe’s top emerging coaches, he was previously linked to Liverpool, though Dutch coach Arne Slot ultimately took the Anfield role.

Earlier this year, he also engaged in talks with West Ham before the club hired Julen Lopetegui.
