Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has highlighted the innovations he introduced across various sectors of the state’s economy during his eight years in office.
Speaking during a live broadcast on Monday night, Obaseki acknowledged the significant challenges his administration faced but emphasized the notable progress made in governance and infrastructure.
Upon assuming office in 2016, Obaseki said he opted for a transformative agenda rather than simply preserving the status quo.
This approach, he explained, led to extensive reforms in sectors such as education, healthcare, and agriculture.

The governor also stressed his focus on rebuilding state institutions rather than empowering individuals or political godfathers, noting that the result has been a strong and efficient civil service in the state.
“Infrastructure improvements are evident, with over 850 kilometers of roads constructed and nearly 1,000MW of electricity generated daily.
“These developments have positioned Edo as a leader in Nigeria’s economic landscape.
“In education, Obaseki’s initiatives trained over 15,000 teachers, enhancing the learning experience for nearly 400,000 children.
“This commitment has made Edo a benchmark for educational excellence in Africa,” he said.
The governor also highlighted his efforts to combat human trafficking by enhancing vocational training, creating job opportunities, and successfully reintegrating over 6,000 returnees.
He pointed out that his administration upgraded the healthcare system with modern facilities and launched a health insurance scheme that now covers more than 300,000 residents.
The revitalization of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital, he noted, stands as a key example of these advancements.
Additionally, the governor credited the community-led security network he introduced for ensuring safety and contributing to making Edo one of the most peaceful states in the South-South region.
“Agricultural initiatives transformed Edo into a leading producer of palm oil and cassava. Investments in this sector have created thousands of jobs and enhanced food security.
“The focus on technology led to the establishment of innovation hubs that empower youths in tech and creative industries.
“This strategy aims to reduce irregular migration by providing local opportunities.
“I’m leaving behind a comprehensive development plan for Edo State’s future growth.
“This blueprint aims to sustain progress and guide the state’s trajectory over the next three decades,” he added.
Mr. Obaseki, who credited the state’s achievements to collaboration with various stakeholders, encouraged citizens to stay hopeful despite the challenges facing democracy in the country.
The outgoing governor emphasized that the collective efforts of all involved had driven the significant transformation in Edo State.
He also expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported his vision for a brighter future for the state.
