Moghalu Speaks On Kemi Badenoch’s Identity Debate

Nigerian economist and former presidential candidate, Kingsley Moghalu, has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding British politician of Nigerian descent, Kemi Badenoch.

Badenoch’s ascent in British politics and her recent remarks distancing herself from her Nigerian heritage have sparked heated debates within Nigerian communities.

In a statement posted on Sunday via X, Moghalu argued that the debate over Badenoch’s identity and her connection to Nigeria is ultimately irrelevant to the country’s development.

He said, “Even if she were to become the UK Prime Minister tomorrow morning, it would have absolutely ZERO implications (or benefits even) for Nigeria and Nigerians.”

Kemi Badenoch, a Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom, has faced criticism for remarks that some perceive as distancing herself from her Nigerian roots, despite being born in Nigeria.

While many Nigerians take pride in her achievements, others have raised doubts about whether her success truly impacts the socio-political and economic challenges facing Nigeria.

Political analyst Kingsley Moghalu emphasized that the focus should return to Nigeria’s domestic issues, urging citizens to direct their efforts toward addressing the country’s numerous challenges.

“So why all the fuss? Nigerian leaders and Nigerians should fix Nigeria’s problems. “Claiming” Kemi or her “denying” Nigeria won’t solve them,” he said.

Earlier, Badenoch defended her comments about Nigeria after facing criticism from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who accused her of disrespecting her heritage.

The Conservative Party leader, born in the UK and having spent much of her youth in Nigeria, discussed her experiences of living in a country she described as rife with corruption, where fear and instability were a constant part of daily life.
