EFCC Arrests Former NHIS Boss, Usman Yusuf

Operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have raided the home of Prof. Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), in Abuja, and arrested him, according to Daily Trust.

The arrest occurred around 4:46 pm on Wednesday, when the EFCC agents, armed with guns, detained the professor of haematology-oncology and bone marrow transplantation in front of his wife and children.

The reason for the arrest has not been disclosed.

Sources close to the situation indicated that Yusuf was taken to an undisclosed location after being apprehended.

While the specific charges have not been made public, it is believed that his arrest may be related to his activities during his tenure at NHIS.

“The reason for his arrest can’t be made public now because investigations are still ongoing. What I know is that he’s in custody and he will help the detectives in their investigations,” a highly-placed source told Daily Trust Wednesday night.

In 2019, former President Muhammadu Buhari dismissed Yusuf from his position, seven months after a fact-finding panel established by the Federal Ministry of Health recommended his removal due to allegations of mismanaging N919 million.
