Celine Dion has issued a warning regarding AI-generated songs that are circulating online, claiming to feature her musical performances, name, and likeness.
In an Instagram post on Saturday, the Canadian singer stated, “It has come to our attention that unauthorized, AI-generated music claiming to feature Celine Dion’s performances, as well as her name and likeness, is currently being shared online and across various Digital Service Providers.”
She added, “Please be advised that these recordings are fake, unapproved, and not part of her official discography.”
Although Dion did not specify any particular recordings, the use of AI in the music industry has become a growing issue.
In April 2024, over 200 artists, including Billie Eilish, Kacey Musgraves, J Balvin, Ja Rule, Jon Bon Jovi, the Jonas Brothers, Katy Perry, and Miranda Lambert, signed an open letter addressing the threats posed by artificial intelligence in the music industry.
Organized by the Artist Rights Alliance, the letter urged AI developers, technology companies, and digital music platforms to “stop using artificial intelligence in ways that infringe on and devalue the rights of human artists.”
It highlighted concerns such as deepfakes, voice cloning, and the misuse of AI to lower royalty payments to artists or to use their music without permission to train AI models.
Dion, 56, recently made her return to the public eye after taking time off due to Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological disorder that causes muscle rigidity and spasms, as well as sensitivity to stimuli such as sound, light, and emotional stress.
She revealed her diagnosis in December 2022 and shared that she was undergoing intensive therapy, focusing on physical, vocal, and athletic rehabilitation.
In July 2024, Dion made a triumphant return to the stage at the Paris Olympics, performing Edith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’Amour” while standing atop a platform on the Eiffel Tower during the opening ceremony.
