The immediate past governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has stated that there will be no major consequences if the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly impeaches his successor, Siminalayi Fubara.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), expressed that there would be nothing wrong if the lawmakers chose to remove Fubara over alleged impeachable offenses, such as withholding their salaries for several months.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) powerbroker said, “If you have committed an offence to be impeached, what’s wrong? Is it a criminal offence? It’s provided in the constitution. Am I a member of the Assembly?
“If you have committed an infraction of the constitution and the Assembly deems it fit to say, you should be impeached.
“I have heard people say: ‘Oh, if they impeach him, there will be break down of law and order’. Rubbish! Nothing will happen.”

On Friday, February 28, 2025, the Supreme Court issued a series of rulings regarding the ongoing political crisis in the oil-rich South-South state.
In the judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, the five-member panel unanimously rejected the cross-appeal filed by Governor Fubara, which challenged the legitimacy of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule.
The court’s decision ordered Amaewhule to resume his duties immediately alongside other elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Additionally, the Supreme Court directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies to withhold funds from the Rivers State government until it addresses what the court described as its blatant disregard for court orders.
The court also declared the local government election held in the state on October 5, 2024, as invalid.
Following the ruling, Fubara committed to fully implementing the Supreme Court’s decisions and instructed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to establish plans for holding a new election.
The RSIEC subsequently set August 9, 2025, as the date for the fresh local government elections.
The Assembly later issued an arrest warrant for RSIEC Chief, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), due to his failure to appear before the House.
Additionally, the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, sent a letter dated March 7, 2025, requesting a meeting with the lawmakers on March 10, 2025, to discuss the re-presentation of the 2025 budget and peace talks.
However, the Assembly insisted that the governor properly formalize his invitation.
