Abubakar Malami, former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice under President Muhammadu Buhari, recently criticized the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) for being insensitive to citizens’ struggles and prioritizing politics over governance.
Speaking on Sunday in Abuja at the National Political Consultative Group (North) meeting attended by prominent figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi.
Malami argued that instead of tackling pressing issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, and rising poverty, the APC chose to focus on endorsing President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 election, which is still two years away.

Malami delivered a keynote address at the meeting, highlighting how poor policies, including the unplanned removal of fuel subsidy and mismanagement of borders, have severely impacted northern Nigeria’s economy.
He expressed shock that the government has seemingly abandoned governance amid such critical economic and security challenges, stating that the Tinubu administration’s “reckless decisions” have crippled agriculture, the North’s economic backbone.
A communique from the meeting, signed by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, outlined the northern delegates’ resolve to present a united front in future political choices.
Key points from the communique include:
- Worsening Insecurity: Delegates expressed deep concern over the “unprecedented” level of insecurity under the current administration, which has exacerbated poverty, loss of lives and property, unemployment, and destitution across the northern region.
- Knowledge-Driven Decisions: The group, founded to unite Northern political leaders, agreed that the North must be guided by knowledge, not fear or emotion, in its political decisions.
- United Political Front: Delegates resolved to move forward with a united political front to ensure the region maximizes its participation and returns in national politics.
- Urgent Platform Unveiling: The communique urged the swift unveiling of the political platform through which the region’s interests would be pursued.
- Selfless Leadership: It emphasized the need for selfless leaders in both political party management and public sector governance.
- Accountability of Elected Leaders: The delegates decried the “impunity” of elected officials who make decisions for their constituents without consultation, citing recent endorsements for re-election. They advised constituents to sanction such officials as a deterrent.
- Grassroots Expansion: The group agreed to expand its initiative to all 19 northern states and the FCT.
- Economic Prioritization: The region must prioritize industrialization and high productivity across all sectors to overcome the current economic challenges.
- Equity and Justice: In striving for a united North, issues of equity, fairness, and justice within and between states must be comprehensively addressed.
- Enforceable Agreements: Going forward, northern support for candidates will be based on enforceable agreements to protect the region’s informed interests, regardless of candidates’ origins.
The meeting concluded with a resolution to establish committees to facilitate the implementation of its decisions and resolutions.
