What PDP NEC Did Concerning National Secretary Position

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has deferred discussions on the contentious national secretary position until June 30.

This announcement was made by the party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, while reading the communique issued after the party’s 99th NEC meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

Damagum confirmed that NEC received the resolution from the South-East General Executive regarding the national secretary position.

However, the meeting agreed to consider and deliberate on the issue during the next NEC meeting scheduled for June 30.

The PDP South-East Zonal Executive Committee had, on May 21, nominated former National Youth Leader, Sunday Udeh-Okoye, to replace Sen. Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.

The PDP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis over this position, with both Anyanwu and Udey-Okoye claiming the office.

Damagum also stated that NEC received and ratified the composition of the committee on the zoning of national offices in preparation for the party’s national convention.

Members of this zoning committee include Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa (Chairman), Gov. Dauda Lawal of Zamfara (Vice Chairman), and Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau (Secretary).

Furthermore, Damagum named the members of the National Convention Committee: Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri (Chairman), Gov. Ademola Adeleke (Vice Chairman), and and Gov. Peter Mbah (Secretary).

Damagum reported that NEC thoroughly examined the state of affairs in the nation and within the party, expressing significant concern over the prevailing security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, and community attacks across various parts of the country.

He also lamented the economic hardship and poverty levels exacerbated by fuel price hikes, increased electricity tariffs, and multiple taxes.

The acting national chairman called on the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to take practical steps to address the nation’s insecurity and economic woes.

He reiterated the party’s belief in democracy, the rule of law, and the supremacy of the people’s will, as expressed through free and unhindered democratic participation in multi-party politics and governance.

Damagum noted that the successful convening of the NEC meeting clearly demonstrated the party’s unity and focus despite its challenges.

He reassured Nigerians that the PDP remains “strong, resilient, united and determined now more than ever before in leading the charge to rescue Nigeria.”
