Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, has outlined his governance plan for Nigeria should he be elected president in the next electoral cycle.
Speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Sunday Politics,’ the former Anambra State governor pledged to prioritize the rule of law, invest heavily in education, and support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
Obi also promised to form a competent cabinet, ensuring appointments align with Nigeria’s federal character principle. “As the President of Nigeria, I will bring civility and order in governance. I will govern with the Constitution of Nigeria, and I will respect the Constitution. I will govern within the law, and I will make appointments by federal character. I will appoint competent persons with capacity and compassion for the good of Nigeria,” he stated.

The LP chieftain emphasized that his administration would make the security of lives and properties of all Nigerians its utmost priority.
He committed to significant investments in education, which he described as a primary focus, as well as in healthcare and robust support for SMEs.
“The things that, as President, I will have hands-on reported to me daily are the security of lives and properties of every Nigerian citizen, and the basic education of our children. It is more important for Nigeria to invest in education than oil,” Obi explained.
He further detailed plans for healthcare, stating, “I will make sure that I have everything that happens about the health of Nigerians, ensuring that we increase the insurance coverage; the rich will pay, while the poor will benefit.”
He also highlighted his intent to closely monitor daily power generation and distribution, and to ensure SMEs receive proper support with adequate interest rates.
Obi made it clear he would not follow the precedent of a president simultaneously holding the petroleum ministry portfolio. Instead, he affirmed that every ministry would be led by a substantive minister possessing the necessary competence, compassion, and capacity to drive his administration’s agenda.
“I’m not going to be Minister of Petroleum. Every ministry would have a substantive minister with competent character, compassion, and capacity to run that ministry,” he concluded.
