The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, failed to reconvene for plenary on Thursday, January 15, 2026, marking exactly one week since its last adjournment.
This unexpected pause comes amidst intensifying speculation that certain lawmakers were maneuvering to “impeach Amaewhule” during the scheduled session.
The Assembly had previously initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu, alleging “gross misconduct,” including the demolition of the Assembly complex and unauthorized spending.
However, the momentum of the move appears to have stalled as four lawmakers—Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo, Peter Abbey, Barile Nwakoh, and Emilia Amadi—formally withdrew their support for the impeachment earlier this week, advocating instead for a political resolution.

On Thursday, the Assembly’s temporary chamber at the legislative quarters on Aba Road remained quiet.
An anonymous high-ranking government official mocked the legislative drama, comparing the lawmakers to “Nollywood ‘players’” and suggesting they were better suited for the film industry.
Commenting on the Speaker’s absence, the official noted: “What I heard… was that there was an attempt to impeach the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, today, but I think he got wind of it and decided not to reconvene the House.”
He added a warning that“the hunter has become the hunted,”remarking that “an animal that removes itself from a trap set is still in the bush.”
Former federal lawmaker Chief Ogbonna Nwuke observed that the House seems to be “beginning to bend” following various internal and external interventions.
Nwuke emphasized that “what great minds in Rivers State want at this time… is a clear understanding that there will be no impeachment” and that a functional relationship between the executive and legislature must be restored.
While lawmakers like Nwakoh and Amadi still maintain that constitutional infractions occurred, they have shifted their stance toward mercy and dialogue, citing appeals from leaders like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
They expressed a “willingness to look at a political solution rather than an outright removal” of the Governor and his Deputy, provided there are assurances that the executive will “govern in line with the constitution and keep all agreements.”
