Wike Opens Up On Meeting Between Him, Fubara And Tinubu, Gives Fresh Directive To Rivers Assembly

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has provided details regarding a high-stakes meeting between himself, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and President Bola Tinubu.

The meeting, held on Monday, February 9, 2026, was convened by the President in a fresh attempt to broker peace between the Governor and the Rivers State House of Assembly.

This marks the fourth time the President has stepped in to mediate the long-standing power struggle in the state.

Following a tour of infrastructure projects in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike expressed hope that this intervention would be the turning point for the crisis.

“I remember this is the second time the President is intervening and believe by the grace of God, this is going to be the last time,” Wike stated.

The Minister confirmed that specific instructions were given during the closed-door session at the Presidential Villa.

“I have told the assembly to do the needful and obey Mr. President, which I know they will not hesitate. I also believe the governor will carry out his own part to make sure that this is the final time Rivers people will hear this kind of discord,” he added.

Observers noted a potential shift in the atmosphere on Sunday night when Governor Fubara reportedly accompanied Wike to the Minister’s private residence in Guzape after the initial talks.

Some reports suggested that the Governor pledged to maintain a more respectful relationship with his predecessor.

Despite these optimistic signs, the political situation remains precarious.

This intervention follows the issuance of a third impeachment notice against Fubara by lawmakers loyal to Wike—a move that was recently stalled by a court injunction.

It remains unclear if the pro-Wike lawmakers will formally withdraw the notice or if Fubara has made concessions regarding his 2027 second-term ambitions, which has been a major point of contention between the two camps.
