Senator Barinada Mpigi, the federal lawmaker representing the Rivers South-East senatorial district, has passed away.
The 64-year-old Senator was a known political ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and his death occurred on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

While his passing has been confirmed, the specific cause of his sudden death remained unidentified at the time of the report.
In his final role within the 10th National Assembly, Mpigi served as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works.
His death was acknowledged publicly by Lere Olayinka, the spokesperson for Nyesom Wike, who posted a tribute on his verified Facebook page stating, “RIP Senator Barinada Mpigi.”
