Five Things You Don’t Know About Acting IGP Tunji Disu

Following the sudden resignation of Kayode Egbetokun, President Bola Tinubu has officially named Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) in a significant reorganization of Nigeria’s security leadership.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the move on Tuesday evening, stating, “In view of the current security challenges confronting the nation, and acting in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to serve as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.”

Onanuga further explained that the President would soon summon the Nigeria Police Council to finalize the process, as “his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation” after the Council considers him for the substantive role.

As the nation prepares for this new chapter at Louis Edet House, here are five essential facts about acting IGP Tunji Disu:

1. A Decorated International Athlete

Beyond his police uniform, Disu is a high-level judoka. In August 2022, while serving as the head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), he “won a silver medal in the U.S. Open Judo Championship” in the veteran division in Massachusetts.

2. Architect of the ‘Good Guys’ Rebranding

While leading the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, Disu became famous for rebranding the unit as “The Good Guys.” This initiative was designed to foster public trust and “give a human face to policing” in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

3. Highly Academic Background

Disu is one of the force’s most educated officers, holding three distinct degrees: a Bachelor’s in English Education from LASU, a Master’s in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University, and a second Master’s in Criminology, Security, and Legal Psychology from LASU.

4. Diverse Command Experience

The Lagos-born officer has a track record of dismantling criminal networks across Nigeria. He served as the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State starting November 2023, before moving to the FCT Command in September 2025. He also gained national prominence when he was appointed to “head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), taking over from Abba Kyari” in 2021.

5. A Swift Return to Abuja

Having only recently taken over as AIG in charge of FCID Alagbon in Lagos, Disu—who joined the force in 1992—is now returning to the nation’s capital to face his biggest challenge yet. Many Nigerians hope his “policing with a human face” philosophy will effectively address the current wave of insecurity.
