“PDP Has Emptied Itself Into The Ruling Party” – Akpabio Announces Senators Defection To APC

The Senate has confirmed the defection of three more lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The senators involved are Amos Yohanna (Adamawa North), Aminu Iya Abbas (Adamawa Central), and Ikra Aliyu Bilbis (Zamfara Central).

Their formal letters of resignation were read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session.

The lawmakers identified internal crises within the PDP in their home states as the primary motivation for their move.

Following these latest changes, the APC now holds 83 seats in the Senate, while the PDP’s count has fallen to 19.

The remaining seats are distributed among the ADC (4), and the NNPP, SDP, and APGA, which hold one seat each, while the Labour Party currently has no representation.

Senate President Akpabio characterized the wave of defections as an indicator that the nation is moving in the right direction, noting that the political tide has reversed since the 8th Assembly.

He remarked that the “PDP has emptied itself into the ruling party,” and stated that “he agreed with the Senate Leader that something must be right somewhere.”

Akpabio linked this political shift to the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu, specifically the “harmonisation of foreign exchange rates, the removal of fuel subsidy, and measures aimed at strengthening fiscal management.”

He added that these reforms have helped place Nigeria on a “trajectory of economic growth” and reduced the reliance of state governments on heavy borrowing.
