Nigeria To Cancel Passports Of Citizens Who Renounce Nationality

The Federal Government has issued a mandate for the prompt seizure and cancellation of Nigerian passports held by persons who have officially given up their citizenship.

This order was made public by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a post on the ministry’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account this Saturday.

The Minister has tasked the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) with the immediate implementation of this directive.

According to a statement released by his media aide, Alao Babatunde, the measure applies exclusively to individuals whose formal renunciation of Nigerian nationality has received presidential approval, as stipulated by the Constitution.

Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Mr. Tunji-Ojo stated that the move is designed to protect the “integrity of Nigeria’s citizenship framework” and to “prevent the misuse of official travel documents.”
