The market for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has recorded a significant price correction after scaling past ₦2,000 per kilogram in June, with current retail rates dropping by roughly 39 percent as depot supplies improve.
At major gas refilling plants in commercial hubs like Lagos and parts of the South-West, cooking gas now sells between ₦1,350 and ₦1,500 per kilogram, providing major relief to households compared to previous peaks.
However, prices at smaller roadside gas shops and neighborhood cylinder-swap kiosks remain slightly higher, ranging between ₦1,500 and ₦1,700 per kilogram due to extra handling and localized transport markups added by small-scale vendors.
For standard household requirements, prevailing market averages at major plants reflect the following estimates:
5kg Cylinder Refill: Ranges from ₦6,800 to ₦7,500 at standard plants, while roadside vendors charge up to ₦8,000 depending on the location.
12.5kg Cylinder Refill: Sells between ₦16,500 and ₦18,750 at major filling stations, with remote towns recording higher totals due to distribution overheads.
Industry operators note that while wholesale terminal prices have eased closer to the ₦1,000 to ₦1,150 per kilogram threshold, regional disparities across the North and remote South-South corridors persist due to transport logistics from coastal storage terminals.
