Fintech platform OPay has strongly refuted a viral social media claim alleging that it has stopped using customers’ phone numbers as wallet account numbers, calling the report entirely false and misleading.
The controversy began after an X user, Israel Gharee, posted that OPay had discontinued phone-number-based accounts and was requiring users to visit agents to update their details.
In response via its official X account, OPay stated, “OPay still uses phone numbers as wallet account numbers,” adding that customers do not need to visit an agent to change or upgrade their account numbers.
The fintech firm warned that circulating false information about financial institutions can mislead the public, create unnecessary panic, and cause reputational harm.
OPay demanded that the author delete the post within 30 minutes, warning that failure to comply could result in “further legal action as appropriate.”
While OPay provides a My BizPayment feature for merchant transactions, the presence of business accounts does not mean the company has scrapped phone-number-based wallets.
This incident follows a previous event where the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre arrested an individual for spreading a false notice claiming OPay was shutting down.
Licensed as a mobile money operator by the Central Bank of Nigeria, OPay operates within a regulated sector where accurate communication is vital.
