The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has officially released its comprehensive compilation of universities authorized to enroll students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree program across Nigeria as of August 2026.
Through a public announcement published on Monday and bearing the date August 14, 2026, the Council cautioned prospective applicants, parents, and guardians against seeking admission into unaccredited legal education programs, emphasizing that individuals finishing from such institutions will be disqualified from entering the Nigerian Law School.
The Council clarified that any institution admitting students to study law absent of official accreditation acts directly against the regulatory standards governing legal training within the nation, exposing themselves to potential disciplinary actions.
“The Council of Legal Education hereby informs the general public, prospective students, parents, guardians, and other stakeholders that only universities accredited by the Council of Legal Education are authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria,” the notice stated.
It added: “Furthermore, students admitted into Law programmes in universities that are not accredited by the Council of Legal Education will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School”.
Issued to guide citizens, the registry noted that the document will undergo periodic updates pursuant to its legal obligations.
The publication was duly authorized and endorsed by Aderonke O. Osho, who serves as the Secretary to the Council alongside her role as Director of Administration.
Additionally, the directory details certain institutions placed under an admission moratorium, barring them from accepting fresh candidates into their LL.B tracks throughout specific timeframe windows mandated by the governing body.
These include Baze University, Abuja, facing a three-year pause spanning the 2023/2024 through 2025/2026 academic sessions; Lead City University, Ibadan, undergoing a five-year suspension from 2023/2024 to 2027/2028; and the Nigeria Police Academy located in Wudil, constrained by a two-year hold covering 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic periods.
Aspirants looking to study law are strongly urged to verify the accreditation standing of their preferred institutions beforehand to prevent joining programs ineligible for Nigerian Law School progression.
