Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has revealed that he expects to become the primary target for top opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, if President Bola Tinubu does not secure a second term in 2027.

Speaking during an interactive media session in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Wednesday, the former governor defended his strong advocacy for Tinubu’s return to office while maintaining his opposition membership.

Wike’s political friction with Atiku, who now leads the African Democratic Congress presidential movement, stems from the contentious 2022 primary elections.

Similarly, despite Obi’s previous attempts to secure Wike’s endorsement under the Labour Party before becoming the 2027 candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, the minister publicly aligned with Tinubu during the last presidential contest.

Reflecting on the heavy stakes tied to his political alignment, Wike explained that backing the incumbent administration creates significant personal vulnerability if the political power shifts.

Highlighting his exposure, he stated, “My concern is, I will support Mr President. If you watch what is happening today and look at it, peradventure anything happens and Mr President fails today, I will be the first politician that Atiku or Obi will hunt for his head.”

He stressed his determination to remain active throughout the upcoming campaign cycle, emphasizing, “I challenge anybody. So, I won’t make that mistake of sleeping to see that the President loses the election.”

The minister noted that his open confrontation with prominent opposition figures ensures that a loss for the governing coalition directly exposes him to severe political retaliation under a new government.

He maintained that his aggressive mobilization efforts are essential for safeguarding both his coalition’s interests and his own political survival.

His remarks underline the tense political dynamics and high-risk strategies shaping alliances ahead of the upcoming national ballot.

Wike ultimately asserted that he has no intention of standing aside to allow Atiku or other opposition contenders to claim victory in 2027 as political groups gear up for the general elections.
