The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that opposition from Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma to his Rainbow Coalition initiative is not driven by fears of destabilizing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Wike, who remains a key leader in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the assertion on Monday while speaking with journalists during an inspection tour of key road infrastructure projects across the Federal Capital Territory.
Addressing claims that the Rainbow Coalition is a political strategy to position himself for the 2031 presidential race, Wike dismissed the timeline as premature, framing the current friction as anxiety over presidential succession.
“People take the position of God. First of all, you have to pray that you are alive. You must ask God, ‘Keep me alive till tomorrow. God, keep me alive till the next day.’ When God keeps you alive, then you now know what to do. How can you sit now and start planning about 2030, 31?” Wike said.
The minister maintained that his primary focus remains securing a second term for President Bola Tinubu, insisting that the coalition seeks to mobilize support from non-APC members similar to the strategy employed by the PDP G5 governors during the 2023 general elections.
“It is not correct. I mean, we have not gone to anybody to say, ‘Don’t support anybody.’ We said all our party members, all those like-minds who are not APC members, to please ensure that they support Mr. President. This is not the first time, first of all, in 2023 when it was G5, right? Why is it that nobody complained that it would destabilise the party?” he asked.
Wike promised to reveal the underlying motives behind the attacks on the coalition during a scheduled television appearance on TVC later on Monday evening.
“You will hear the full details today of why all this cry about Rainbow Coalition. I will tell you, and Nigerians will be shocked when they hear the full details about the so-called Rainbow Coalition. I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag now, so just hold your breath,” Wike stated.
During the field inspection, the minister expressed satisfaction with ongoing construction work on the ISEX 2, Southern Parkway, and the Nile University to Ring Road 3 axis, confirming that contractors have committed to delivering the projects by January 10, 2027.
