The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of offering financial inducements, political appointments, and material perks to corruptly influence some of its candidates into defecting, prompting the opposition party to schedule fresh primary elections across affected constituencies.
The NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, revealed the decision in a press statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, confirming that the new primaries will be organized in strict compliance with the Electoral Act, 2026.
It has come to the attention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) that some candidates of our party have been bribed by the APC to defect to the ruling and ruinous All Progressives Congress (APC), obviously for pecuniary reasons,
Director stated.
The opposition spokesperson criticized the ruling party’s tactics, describing them as aggressive maneuvers designed to destabilize competing political parties ahead of the upcoming general elections.
The NDC is fully aware of the desperate and malicious tactics of the APC, which has resorted to offering money, political appointments, and other material incentives to induce some money-minded candidates of our party to jump ship and defect to its sinking fold,
he noted.
Dismissing the defecting candidates, Director asserted that their departure reflects a lack of ideological alignment and commitment to the core principles of the NDC.
For those who have fallen for this bait, it is clear that they lack the values, virtues, and ideological commitment associated with our great party. They were never truly of us. To them, we say good riddance to bad rubbish, and we wish them luck in their political misadventures,
he added.
To fill the vacancies left by the defectors, the NDC affirmed that it will immediately initiate congresses to select new candidate representations across all impacted electoral districts.
In line with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, the party will immediately conduct fresh congresses to elect credible, competent, and trustworthy candidates to replace the defectors in the affected constituencies,
the statement emphasized.
Reassuring party faithful and voters nationwide, the NDC urged members to stay focused, framing the ruling party’s actions as a sign of panic over its waning electoral prospects.
These are the last kicks of a dying horse that has seen the handwriting on the wall of its imminent defeat. The NDC remains resolutely committed to its historic mission of rescuing our country from the vice grip of the buccaneers in power and giving Nigerians the good governance, security, and prosperity they so richly desire,
the party concluded.
