The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has outlined how Nigerians can download their official National Identification Number (NIN) slips online free of charge using the official NINAuth mobile application.

The commission demonstrated the step-by-step digital process in a video guide published on its official X account on Wednesday, showing how NIN holders can generate the identity document directly from their smartphones without visiting physical enrolment centers or engaging third-party vendors.

To access the free digital service, NIMC outlined the following steps:

1. Download the official NINAuth application from either the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

2. Open the application on your mobile device.

3. Select the “Do More with NINAuth” option.

4. Choose “NIN Slip” from the listed identity services.

5. Complete the on-screen facial authentication process to verify account ownership.

Upon completing facial verification, the system enables users to generate and download their official digital slip instantly.

“Once verified, click on ‘Download NIN Slip’ to generate and save the official NIMC-issued NIN slip into your mobile phone,” the commission advised.

Describing the digital feature as a secure and seamless alternative to physical visits, NIMC emphasized that the self-service option is completely free.

“It is that simple, it is free, available, and a few taps away. Get yours today,” the commission added.

The self-service initiative forms part of NIMC’s broader strategy to eliminate long queues at state offices and protect citizens from extortion by unverified third-party agents.

NIMC initially rolled out the NINAuth platform in October 2025 to give citizens direct control over their personal data permissions across financial institutions, telecommunication networks, educational portals, and government agencies.

In June 2026, the commission expanded the application’s capabilities by enabling free, direct downloads of official NIN slips.

According to technical specifications on the NINAuth platform, the downloadable slip carries full legal validity identical to documents issued directly at NIMC centres and can be presented for verification across commercial banks, government offices, and allied institutions.

The National Identification Number is an 11-digit unique identifier assigned to citizens and legal residents upon successful enrolment, serving as the foundational key to the National Identity Database.

To obtain an initial NIN, individuals must register at an authorized NIMC enrolment centre, submit demographic details, and undergo biometric recording—including facial capturing and fingerprint scans—before an identification number is issued.
