Risks Of Drinking Cold Water

Research indicates that individuals with certain esophageal conditions, such as achalasia—a rare disorder that impairs the ability to swallow—might benefit from avoiding cold water.

Achalasia can make swallowing difficult, and a 2012 study found that cold water exacerbated symptoms in those with the condition.

In contrast, hot water appeared to help soothe and relax the esophagus, easing the swallowing process.

Additionally, a 2001 study involving 669 women suggested that cold water might trigger headaches in some individuals.

The study reported that 7.6% of participants experienced a headache after drinking 150 milliliters of ice-cold water through a straw.

Those with active migraines were found to be twice as likely to experience a headache from cold water compared to those without a history of migraines.

Despite some claims, there is no scientific evidence supporting the notion that cold drinks or foods can cause a sore throat or lead to a cold
