Nigerian Governor Declares Thursday Public Holiday

The Plateau State Government has extended the public holiday for the ongoing local government elections to Thursday.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Secretary to the State Government, Samuel Jatau, explained that the extension is to allow those who traveled for the election ample time to return home.

It read, “His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang has approved that Thursday,10th October 2024 be declared as a public holiday to enable citizens who traveled for the Local Government Elections to return.

“The Executive Governor further thanks citizens for their peaceful conduct during the exercise”

The local government elections, which commenced late on Wednesday in many polling units, were also marked by technical difficulties across various LGAs.

As a result, the electoral commission extended the voting hours from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

On Monday, Governor Mutfwang declared Wednesday, October 9, a public holiday to enable citizens to participate in the elections. Additionally, Tuesday was declared a half-work day in preparation for the polls.
