President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Abba Abubakar Aliyu as the permanent Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
In a statement, Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, announced that the appointment, which is effective from January 23, 2025, will last for an initial four-year term.

Aliyu has been serving as the acting managing director of the agency since March 2024.
Onanuga highlighted that Aliyu brings over 20 years of experience in energy and organizational development across both the private and public sectors. He has held leadership roles in the on-grid and off-grid power sectors, as well as in water resources and transportation.
Before this appointment, Aliyu was the head of the Project Management Unit at the Nigeria Electrification Project and served in various roles at Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading PLC (NBET), including General Manager of Corporate Services, Projects, and Research, and Deputy General Manager.
The statement further noted that President Tinubu expects Aliyu to apply his vast expertise to advance the REA’s mission of providing reliable electricity to rural areas and contribute to the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda for sustainable energy and power.
