Kaduna SDP Disowns El-Rufai

The Kaduna State Chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has publicly declared that former governor Nasir El-Rufai is not a recognized member of their party in Kaduna State.

This statement comes after El-Rufai and some former members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) switched their political allegiance to the SDP.

El-Rufai cited a growing disconnect between his personal values and the APC’s current direction as the reason for his departure.

In a press statement released on his X (formerly Twitter) account, El-Rufai expressed his disappointment with the APC’s leadership, accusing them of deviating from the progressive principles of the party’s founders.

“As a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I have fond memories of working with other compatriots to negotiate the merger of political parties that created the APC. Since 2013, I have hoped that my personal values and those of the APC will continue to align until I choose to retire from politics.”

However, during a press conference in Kaduna on Friday, Idris Inuwa, the SDP’s Assistant National Secretary for the Northwest zone, clarified that El-Rufai’s reported membership is based on rumors, as he has not completed the necessary procedures to become a party member.

“It has come to our notice that certain individuals, including Nasir El-Rufai, are being rumored to have joined the SDP. However, neither the Chairman of the Kaduna North Local Government Chapter in Kaduna State, nor the leadership of Unguwar Sarki ward, has any record of these memberships,” Inuwa said.

Inuwa advised El-Rufai and his associates to adhere to the correct protocols if they wish to formally join the Social Democratic Party.

“We advise him and any other interested individuals to follow the proper procedures if they wish to officially become members of the party,” he said.
