The 11th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) took place in Lagos, Nigeria, on Saturday night, drawing a large number of celebrities from across Africa.
Hosted by IK Osakioduwa, the glamorous event celebrated outstanding achievements in African film and television across 28 categories, including the newly introduced Best Music Score.
“Lisabi: The Uprising,” produced by and starring Lateef Adedimeji, emerged as a significant winner, taking home awards for Best Indigenous Language Film (West Africa), Best Art Direction, and Best Makeup.
The historical drama, directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, tells the story of an Egba farmer who leads a resistance against the oppressive Alaafin of Oyo in the 19th century.
Adedimeji and his wife, Adebimpe Oyebade, who also featured in the film, dedicated their awards to God and their dedicated team.
Despite “Lisabi’s” success, the highly anticipated Best Movie award went to “Freedom Way” by Blessing Uzzi. The 2024 action thriller, directed by Afolabi Olalekan, addresses themes such as corruption, police brutality, and youth oppression in Nigeria, beating other strong contenders like “Skeleton Coast,” “Suspicion,” and “House of Ga’a.”
“Seven Doors,” a supernatural Netflix series by Femi Adebayo, also had a successful night, winning Best Lead Actor (Femi Adebayo), Best Lead Actress (Chioma Chukwuka), and Best Music Score (Tolu Obanro). The show’s compelling narrative about a cursed monarch resonated with viewers at the awards ceremony.
In special recognitions, Nollywood icons Nkem Owoh and Sani Mu’azu were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards, while director Kayode Kasum received the Trailblazer Award for his contributions to African storytelling.
The night also featured performances by Nigerian Idol Season 9 winner Chima, singer Johnny Drille, and popular online sensations Fido, Kunmie, and Serotonin.
