Key figures within Governor Ademola Adeleke’s campaign council, alongside a member of the House of Representatives, have formally demanded an immediate investigation following an alleged invasion of a Registration Area Centre (RAC) in Ife East Local Government by armed police officers during the ongoing Osun State governorship election, during which critical electoral materials were carted away.
The incident unfolded at Ife East Ward 10, alternatively recognized as Modakeke Ward 3. Visual evidence surfaced via a Facebook video published by Hon. Bamidele Salam, the federal representative for Ede North/South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency, depicting police officers loading items into a vehicle before departing from the scene while an eyewitness narrated the chaotic event in both English and Yoruba.
Sounding the alarm early Saturday morning, Hon. Salam implored the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to launch an immediate inquiry.
“There is an allegation that some of your men in this video just invaded a RAC centre in Ife East Local Government Ward 10 (Modakeke ward 3) and fired tear gas to disrupt distribution of election materials at a RAC centre,” he stated, urging law enforcement to “investigate and act now to protect a credible electoral process in Osun state.”
Echoing these concerns in a separate press release, Pelumi Olajengbesi, the spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, verified the narrative, alleging that uniform personnel deployed tear gas directly at individuals who had gathered peacefully at the RAC facility to receive election items alongside officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prior to heading out to their respective polling units.
“We urgently call the attention of the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security authorities to this situation,” Olajengbesi remarked.
He further requested that authorities thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the disruption and take swift measures to restore order, ensuring that the electoral process proceeds smoothly.
“We ask that the circumstances be immediately investigated and appropriate steps taken to ensure calm and allow the electoral process to proceed peacefully,” Olajengbesi asserted, emphasizing that “the people must be allowed to exercise their right to vote without fear or intimidation.”
In the meantime, he appealed to residents stationed near the area to maintain composure, remain peaceful, and act lawfully while stakeholders work to address the situation.
