The Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate the 2026 Eid ul Mawlid, celebrating the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, made this declaration on behalf of the Federal Government via an official statement released on Friday by Dr Magdalene Ajani, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary.

The minister congratulated all Muslims residing in Nigeria as well as those across the diaspora, encouraging them to view the festive season as a meaningful opportunity to reflect deeply on the core teachings and values exemplified throughout the life of Prophet Muhammad.

Tunji-Ojo stated that the occasion provides a valuable chance for all citizens to draw essential lessons from the Prophet’s existence, particularly focusing on his virtues of compassion, humility, and dedication to serving humanity.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he noted.

Additionally, the minister called upon Nigerians to utilize the period to offer prayers for peace, enduring unity, and national cohesion, emphasizing that maintaining a peaceful nation remains a shared duty for everyone.

He urged the public to observe the celebrations with moderation, mutual respect, and mindfulness toward one another, while extending wishes for a joyful and peaceful holiday to the Muslim faithful.

Tunji-Ojo also reiterated the unwavering dedication of President Bola Tinubu’s administration toward safeguarding lives and property, alongside advancing stability and harmony nationwide.

He encouraged citizens to keep supporting initiatives designed to reinforce national solidarity and encourage peaceful coexistence among individuals from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.
