A severe fire incident broke out at the popular SPAR Mall in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, on Saturday morning, triggering panic among business owners and residents.

Footage circulating across social media captured thick columns of black smoke billowing into the atmosphere alongside fierce flames engulfing sections of the commercial complex.

Distressed traders and onlookers gathered near the perimeter as the fire advanced rapidly through the structure. In one of the viral clips, an eyewitness remarked, “It’s moving from shop to shop.”

Frustrations mounted among traders at the scene who watched helplessly, with several individuals lamenting the initial absence of prompt emergency assistance.

A weeping woman captured on video expressed anguish over the destruction, stating, “What a day. See what is happening to millions of naira at SPAR shopping mall. No water to quench it, no fire service to rescue. Look at our shops and millions of naira.”

Later footage from the location confirmed the arrival of police officers and firefighting units working to secure the area and suppress the inferno.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Cross River State Government nor local emergency management agencies have released formal statements detailing the root cause of the fire, the magnitude of financial losses, or potential casualties.
